Bringing Space to Comic Con
What I did as a science communicator in July and 11 STEAM opportunities you should know about
I’m coming to you after a whirlwind of travel! I spent about half of this month traveling for work, and am working on recovering and getting ahead before heading out to sea in August. It was an exciting one so…
What did I do in July working as a full-time science communicator?
🦸♀️ I went on maybe the best work trip ever to San Diego Comic Con! I put a packed schedule together for myself complete with:
a day of outreach in the STEAM Mission Control room teaching kids about rockets and propulsion
a dream collaboration with Star Trek Strange New Worlds that had me going to some INCREDIBLE Star Trek events and making some fun videos (last video with the cast coming soon!)
a press pass to cover the technology at the Her Universe fashion show
2 days of cosplaying Ms. Frizzle, including a new space suit costume I made with my mom
Meeting up with some awesome friends, creators and science communicators!
This weekend was many many months in the making and it felt super rewarding for it to go so well. There’s been a lot of video editing since I’ve gotten home of everything I shot at the event.

🚀 Earlier in the month I had a full make-a-thon weekend with my mom to put my new Ms. Frizzle costume together for SDCC!

🎥 Made a short social media video for Mission Unstoppable on the Rubin Observatory.
🧬I also script write and research for Mission Unstoppable’s YouTube series STEM Loft. One of the more complex videos I’ve written just went live covering something called Mirror Life! I’m really proud of this one.
🌕 Continued my social media work for lunar rover company Astrolab.
🔭 I was interviewed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for an article on engineering entrepreneurship.
🌊 The other biggest part of the month was spent in the classrooms of Oxnard, California schools as a part of the summer Water World program. It was super rewarding to do some hands on activities with the students to teach them about ROVs, robotics, and jobs working at sea!

⚓ Related to this, my new ocean expedition is coming up fast! I leave mid-August to sail aboard E/V Nautilus Expedition NA181. That meant truly starting to prep in earnest, reading up about the area we will be sailing, and thinking about my project while I’m out there.
🥇 Got a silver medal in a TikTok learning content contest! (Comes with a $200 prize)
🤳 Made some of my own videos this month on the first shuttle launch, flags on spacesuits, astronauts, and more!
